# Mexico residency income calculator: the 2026 thresholds, and your numbers against them

Free, no email, nothing stored. It does the arithmetic the consulate does, and then tells you the part the arithmetic cannot settle.

Quick answer

Mexican residency thresholds are multiples of the **UMA**, which is **MXN 117.31 a day** for 2026. Temporary residency needs income above **680 UMA a month** (MXN 79,771) or savings averaging **11,460 UMA** (MXN 1,344,373). Permanent residency needs **1,140 UMA a month** (MXN 133,733) or **45,850 UMA** (MXN 5,378,664). Each dependent adds **220 UMA a month**.

## Check your figures

Pick the visa and the route, enter what you have, and it will tell you where you sit against the 2026 requirement. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Check the 2026 threshold

**Requirement:** 680 UMA = **MXN 79,771** per month, about **USD 4,700** at the Banxico FIX rate of 16.9722 on 2026-09-10.

UMA 2026: MXN 117.31 per day (INEGI). Figures verified against primary sources on 2026-09-10. Nothing you type is stored.

## How the UMA works, and why the rules are written in it

Mexican law almost never writes a peso amount into a statute. It writes a multiple of the **Unidad de Medida y Actualización**, and INEGI republishes the value of that unit every January. Fines, social security ceilings and immigration thresholds all move with it, without anyone having to amend the law.

For 2026 the UMA is **MXN 117.31 a day**. It was published in January and takes effect on **1 February 2026**, which is a detail worth holding on to: applications assessed in January 2026 were still measured against the 2025 value.

So a threshold of 680 UMA a month is not a figure someone chose in dollars and converted. It is 680 multiplied by 117.31, which is MXN 79,770.80, and it will be a different peso figure next January without any rule having changed.

Before July 2025 this was genuinely harder

Every consulate used to set its own minimum and publish it in local currency, so the same applicant could qualify in one city and not in the next. The **Lineamientos published on 25 July 2025** replaced that with one national formula in UMA. What is left is conversion noise rather than policy, which is why a calculator can now be accurate for every post at once.

## The 2026 table in full

| Status and route | UMA | Pesos | About, in dollars | Lookback |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Temporary, income | 680 a month | MXN 79,771 | USD 4,700 | 6 months |
| Temporary, savings | 11,460 average | MXN 1,344,373 | USD 79,200 | 12 months |
| Permanent, income | 1,140 a month | MXN 133,733 | USD 7,900 | 6 months |
| Permanent, savings | 45,850 average | MXN 5,378,664 | USD 316,900 | 12 months |
| Each dependent | 220 a month | MXN 25,808 | USD 1,520 | same as principal |
| Investor, company capital | 45,850 | MXN 5,378,664 | USD 316,900 | at application |
| Investor, real estate | 91,710 | MXN 10,757,327 | USD 633,800 | at application |

The peso column is the requirement. The dollar column is arithmetic at the Banco de México FIX rate of **16.9722** on 10 September 2026 and moves with the exchange rate, which is exactly why pages that lead with a dollar figure and never update it end up wrong by a quarter or more.

Whether these numbers point you at [temporary residency](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-temporary-resident-visa) or [permanent residency](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-permanent-resident-visa) is the first real decision in the process, and for retirees the [retirement guide](https://getmexicovisa.com/retire-in-mexico-visa) works through it in detail.

## What it means to be close to the line

The calculator calls anything within **10 percent** of the requirement close rather than qualified, and that band is not caution for its own sake.

Consulates convert the peso figure at their own rate and round it their own way. Some publish an updated sheet within weeks of the January UMA, others take months, and Houston's 2025 sheet still shows 11,400 UMA where the current text says 11,460. Add a moving exchange rate to a stale sheet and a few percent is entirely ordinary. Applying at the very edge of the requirement means the outcome is decided by which sheet the officer is reading.

If you are inside that band there are three sensible moves. Wait until the six month window contains only months that clear the line comfortably. Check the other route, since savings and income are tested separately. Or check whether your own post publishes a figure lower than the peso requirement, and prepare to whichever is higher.

## Clearing the number is the easy half

The number is arithmetic. What refuses applicants who have already done this arithmetic is what the number is written on.

- **Statements the bank issued, stamped and signed.** Not printouts, not screenshots. The Leamington consulate states it plainly and every post applies it. Applicants at online-only banks need to establish months in advance whether their bank can produce one at all.
- **An account in your own name**, matching your passport. Joint accounts are read differently from post to post and are one of the most reported causes of trouble.
- **An unbroken lookback.** Six months of income or twelve of balances, with no gap and no closed account in the middle.
- **Something that says what the money is**, if it is a pension: the award letter, alongside the statements showing it arrive.

This is why the calculator has three states rather than two. The numeric test reliably tells you when you do *not* qualify. It can only tell you that you probably do.

## Why other sites show different numbers

Three reasons, worth being able to tell apart when you are reading around.

1. **An older UMA.** The unit changes every January, so a page built in 2024 is arithmetically correct and about seven percent low.
2. **The pre reform system.** Anything written before July 2025 may be quoting one consulate's own minimum, which was a real thing then and is not now.
3. **A dollar figure that was never updated.** The peso requirement is stable in real terms while the exchange rate is not, so a dollar number frozen two years ago drifts on its own.

The compounding version of all three is what produced the figures on some very high authority sites, which circulate thresholds well below the current requirement. If an answer engine repeats one of those to you, check it against the UMA multiple, which is the only thing that has not moved.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the UMA and why do Mexican visa requirements use it?

The Unidad de Medida y Actualización is an inflation-indexed unit that INEGI republishes every January. Mexican law expresses fines, benefits and immigration thresholds as multiples of it, so those figures rise with inflation without anyone having to amend the statute. For 2026 the UMA is MXN 117.31 a day, in force from 1 February 2026.

### How much income do I need for Mexican temporary residency in 2026?

More than 680 UMA a month over the last six months, which is MXN 79,771, roughly USD 4,700 at the Banxico rate of 16.97 on 10 September 2026. For permanent residency on the retiree route it is more than 1,140 UMA a month, MXN 133,733, roughly USD 7,900.

### Can I add my income and my savings together to qualify?

No. The Lineamientos list the income route and the savings route as alternative ways to meet the same test, and no consulate is known to accept a combination. If you are short on both, you are on the wrong side of both rather than qualified on the total.

### Does the consulate look at my average income or my lowest month?

On the income route, effectively the lowest month. The requirement is monthly income above the line across the last six months, and a single month below it is the version of this that gets refused. The savings route is genuinely an average over twelve months, which is more forgiving of one bad month.

### Why does my consulate publish a different figure from this calculator?

Because each post converts the peso figure into its own local currency at its own rate, on its own schedule. The Leamington consulate in Canada publishes CAD 6,461 a month, which converts consistently to the same UMA multiple. Houston's sheet still shows 11,400 UMA where the current text says 11,460 and computes its dollar figures on the 2025 UMA. Prepare to the peso figure and to whatever your own post publishes, whichever is higher.

### Does the income have to be after tax?

The threshold is expressed as net monthly income, so use what actually arrives rather than gross salary. This matters most to applicants whose gross is comfortably above the line and whose net is not, which is a common way to be surprised at the counter.

### What counts as savings for the Mexican residency threshold?

Bank and investment account balances shown in statements the institution issued, averaged over twelve months. Property is not counted, and a balance held in cryptocurrency is the weakest version of this route because it is not an account statement a bank can stamp. The average is what counts, so an account funded a month before the application does not read the way its current balance suggests.

### Do dependents raise the amount I have to show?

Yes, by 220 UMA a month each, which is MXN 25,808 or roughly USD 1,520. It is added to your requirement rather than shared out of it, so a couple where one spouse has all the income needs that spouse to clear the higher combined figure alone.

### Is this calculator official?

No. It is arithmetic on the published multiples, using the 2026 UMA from INEGI and the Banco de México FIX rate on the date shown. It tells you what the rule says. It does not tell you what a particular officer will decide about your documents, which is the part that refuses most applicants who clear the number.

### Do you store what I type into the calculator?

No. It runs in your browser, nothing is sent anywhere, and there is no email gate. We record only that a calculation happened and which of the three outcomes it produced, so we know whether the tool is useful.
