# Mexican consulate in San Diego: residency visa requirements, read September 2026

San Diego's 2026 sheets are current, and they ask for more than most: an employer who agrees in writing to your remote work, a minimum balance every month, and cash at the window.

Quick answer

San Diego asks for **USD 4,510 a month** or a **minimum monthly balance of USD 75,950** for temporary residency, on its 2026 sheets. An employee's letter must state the employer's **explicit agreement with remote work from Mexico**. The **USD 56** fee is **cash only**, taken before review and never refunded, and appointments are **MiConsulado only, no email**. Today's national figure is about USD 4,700. Read on 22 September 2026.

The consulate opened on 20 October 1879 and is open Monday to Friday, with different hours for each service. Its English page opens with a warning worth taking literally: the requirements apply to the Consulate General in San Diego and may change without prior notice.

## The employer letter: the rule that decides remote workers

If your income is a salary, San Diego asks for a letter signed by your supervisor, on company letterhead and addressed to the Consulate General, that states four things: your full name, position and seniority in the company; your monthly salary; **explicit agreement with your plans to reside in Mexico and work remotely**; and it must come with a copy of the signatory's ID, with the name and signature on the letter matching the ID.

The third item is the one no national list contains. An employer that pays you reliably but will not put its consent to remote work from Mexico in writing leaves you without the letter San Diego asks for. Raise it with your employer before anything else, because it is the one document you cannot produce on your own. The [temporary residency guide](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-temporary-resident-visa) covers the income route more generally.

If your employer will not sign

The savings route needs no employer letter at all: twelve months of statements above the line. And any Mexican consulate can take the application, so a post that does not ask for this clause is a lawful alternative. Check that post's own page for what it does ask.

## The money test, and one word that makes it stricter

San Diego's figures are the 2026 formula, converted at about 17.70 pesos to the dollar. At the Banxico rate of 16.9722 on 10 September 2026 the same multiples are about 4 percent higher.

| Route | San Diego prints | National | About, at 16.9722 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Temporary, income for 6 months | USD 4,510 | MXN 79,771 | USD 4,700 |
| Temporary, balance for 12 months | USD 75,950 | MXN 1,344,373 | USD 79,200 |
| Each family member | USD 1,460 | MXN 25,808 | USD 1,520 |
| Permanent, pension for 6 months | USD 7,560 | MXN 133,733 | USD 7,900 |
| Permanent, balance for 12 months | USD 303,880 | MXN 5,378,664 | USD 316,900 |

The word to notice is **minimum**. The Lineamientos test savings as a monthly average over twelve months. San Diego's sheets ask for statements "proving a minimum monthly balance", which read literally means no single month below the line. A balance that averages above the figure but dipped in one month passes the national test and may not pass San Diego's reading. Keep every month above it.

The [calculator](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-residency-income-calculator) shows where your own figures sit against the national lines; the [permanent residency guide](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-permanent-resident-visa) covers the retirement route.

## Paperwork, item by item

- **The application form**, completed, presented on the day.
- **An original, valid book passport**, with one photocopy each of the data page, the last page and every page carrying a seal or a visa. A passport card is not a book passport.
- If you are not a US citizen, **proof of legal entry to the United States**, original and photocopy.
- **One recent passport-size photograph**, forehead uncovered, facing the camera, no glasses, white background, printed on matte or glossy photo paper.
- **Bank statements in original, complete**, with the bank's official stamp or an official bank letter, showing your full name and your address. **No P.O. box**: the address on the statements has to be a street address.
- For the income route, the employer letter above, or the documents that prove a pension.

The 2025 Lineamientos set out to remove the photograph and photocopies from consular visa applications. San Diego's 2026 sheets still list both, and San Diego is who you are dealing with. Bring them.

## The fee: USD 56, in cash, before anyone looks at the file

San Diego takes the fee **in cash only**, and takes it first: the English page says payment is due before your documents are reviewed and will not be reimbursed whether or not the application succeeds. The sheets put the figure at **USD 56**, which matches SRE's national fee. San Diego's separate fee page still shows the 2025 table at USD 54; the 2026 sheets are the newer document.

The practical consequence is the consulate's own advice: book only when the file is complete. An incomplete file costs the fee and the appointment.

## The appointment

San Diego has booked visas **exclusively through MiConsulado since 1 March 2022**. Its sheets are blunter: MiConsulado with no email, the only authorized service, and best used from a laptop or desktop rather than a phone. Its English page says there are three ways to use MiConsulado and lists only the online one, citas.sre.gob.mx; SRE's national booking page also offers WhatsApp to applicants in the United States and Canada. Whichever you use, book the **VISAS** department, because appointments cannot be exchanged between departments.

On the day an officer reviews the file, conducts the interview in English or Spanish, and captures your biometric data, and may ask for more documents. The decision can take up to ten business days, and the sheets call it final and irrevocable. San Diego does not recommend booking travel before the visa is issued and takes no responsibility for the costs of attending.

The queue is not for sale

MiConsulado is free and San Diego calls it the only authorized service. **We do not book, resell or secure appointments**, and nobody else can do so legitimately.

## Documents from outside San Diego County

Every San Diego sheet ends with the same note. Passports aside, documents issued outside the United States and Mexico need an apostille or legalization and an official translation into Spanish, and **documents issued outside San Diego County may be sent for further validation** to the Mexican authorities in the place where they were issued.

That is the only statement of district we found on San Diego's own site. It does not stop anyone from elsewhere applying there: under the national Lineamientos any consular office can take a visa application. It does mean that a birth or marriage record from another state or country can add time. The [consulate tracker](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexican-consulate-requirements-by-city) sets San Diego beside the other posts we have read.

**Spouses and families.** The family reunification sheet asks for the marriage record and proof of Mexican citizenship where the spouse is Mexican, and the Mexican citizen has to be present at the application. For most relatives of a foreign resident, the sheet also asks for USD 1,460 a month per person, as a balance over twelve months or income over six. The [family unity guide](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-family-unity-visa) explains which status each relative receives.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does the Mexican consulate in San Diego require to prove income?

Its 2026 temporary resident sheet asks for an income of at least USD 4,510 a month from employment or a pension for the previous six months, or bank statements showing a minimum monthly balance of at least USD 75,950 for the previous twelve. Both are the 2026 UMA multiples at about 17.70 pesos to the dollar. At the Banxico rate of 16.9722 on 10 September 2026 they are about USD 4,700 and USD 79,200, which is the safer target.

### What must the employer letter say at the San Diego consulate?

It must be signed by a supervisor, printed on company letterhead and addressed to the Consulate General, and give your full name, position and seniority, your monthly salary, and the company's explicit agreement with your plan to live in Mexico and work remotely. A copy of the signatory's ID goes with it, and the name and signature on the letter must match the ID.

### Can I pay the visa fee by card at the San Diego consulate?

No. San Diego takes the USD 56 fee in cash only, and charges it before the officer reviews your documents. It is not refunded whether or not the visa is granted, which is why the consulate asks applicants not to book until the file is complete.

### Can I email the San Diego consulate for a visa appointment?

No. San Diego's sheets say appointments are made through MiConsulado with no email, that MiConsulado is the only authorized way to book, and that it is best used from a laptop or desktop rather than a phone. Book the VISAS department: appointments cannot be swapped between departments.

### Why might the San Diego consulate send my documents for validation?

Its sheets say documents issued outside San Diego County may be sent to the Mexican authorities in the place where they were issued, for further validation. Documents from a country other than the United States or Mexico also need an apostille or legalization and an official Spanish translation. Allow time for both.

### What does San Diego ask of a retiree for permanent residency?

Its 2026 retirement sheet asks for a pension of at least USD 7,560 a month for the previous six months, or bank statements showing a minimum monthly balance of at least USD 303,880 for the previous twelve, with the bank's official stamp or letter and your full name and street address. At today's rate the national figures are about USD 7,900 and USD 316,900.

### Is the interview at the San Diego consulate in English?

In English or Spanish, according to its sheets. On the day an officer reviews the file, interviews you and takes your biometric data, and may ask for more documents. The decision can take up to ten business days, and the sheets describe it as final.
