# Mexican consulate in Houston: residency visa requirements, read September 2026

Houston applies the national rule from sheets that were last recalculated for 2025. Here is what those sheets say, what they now understate, and how the consulate runs the day.

Quick answer

Houston's residency sheets, marked **v.2025.10.27**, print **about USD 4,342 a month** or **USD 73,189** in savings for temporary residency. Those are the 2025 UMA; today's national figure is about **USD 4,700** and **USD 79,200**, and Houston's figures sit **7.6 percent under** it, so prepare to the national one. Book through **MiConsulado** online or on 1 424 309 0009, one appointment per person, and pay **USD 56** by cash or card. Read on 22 September 2026.

## The figures Houston prints, and what they are now

Houston writes its thresholds the way the law does, in days of UMA, and adds an approximate dollar figure. The days are right. The dollars were worked out on the 2025 UMA of MXN 113.14 at about 17.72 pesos to the dollar, and the UMA rose to MXN 117.31 on 1 February 2026. Every Houston dollar figure is therefore about 7.6 percent under the same multiple at today's value and today's rate.

| Route | Multiple | Houston prints | 2026 national figure | About, at 16.9722 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Temporary, income for 6 months | 680 UMA a month | USD 4,342.08 | MXN 79,771 | USD 4,700 |
| Temporary, month-end balance for 12 months | 11,460 UMA | USD 73,188.95 | MXN 1,344,373 | USD 79,200 |
| Each dependent, a month | 220 UMA | USD 1,405.02 | MXN 25,808 | USD 1,520 |
| Permanent, pension for 6 months | 1,140 UMA a month | USD 7,280.58 | MXN 133,733 | USD 7,900 |
| Permanent, month-end balance for 12 months | 45,850 UMA | USD 292,819.68 | MXN 5,378,664 | USD 316,900 |

An officer in Houston may well read from the sheet in front of them, and the sheet can be replaced with a 2026 version at any time without notice. A file that clears **USD 4,700 a month** or **USD 79,200** in savings passes under either version. The [calculator](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-residency-income-calculator) runs your own figures against the national lines.

Houston's temporary resident page adds one thing worth knowing: it says this visa lets you work in Mexico as long as the salary is paid abroad, and that a job paid in Mexico goes through the National Migration Institute first. The [temporary residency guide](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-temporary-resident-visa) covers what that means once you have the card.

## What Houston asks for

Houston's sheet is precise about the form of every document, and the precision is where files fail.

- **Savings.** Statements certified by the bank, with signature or stamp, for each of the last twelve months. Or a hand-signed letter from the bank with your full name exactly as in your passport and the month-end balance for each of those months, plus copies of the statements. Note the wording: **month-end balance**, where the national text speaks of a monthly average.
- **Pension.** The original letter from Social Security or the paying institution stating the benefit, plus certified statements for each of the last six months showing the deposits.
- **Employment.** A hand-signed employer verification letter with your full name, start date, position and salary, plus six months of payslips; certified statements showing six months of deposits can replace the payslips.
- **Passport** in original, with a copy of the page showing your details and signature.
- **One photograph**, passport size, 39 mm by 31 mm, recent, in colour, white background, face visible, no glasses.
- **The application form**, Houston's own, in English or Spanish.
- If you are not a US citizen, proof of **legal stay in the United States**, original and copy. Houston accepts an entry stamp, ESTA, EAD card, approved I-797, Advance Parole (I-512), I-20 or DS-2019. Its visa page adds that every applicant must be in the United States legally on the day of applying.
- Birth and marriage records from any country other than the United States or Mexico apostilled or legalized, and anything not in English or Spanish officially translated.

## Booking, and how the day runs

Houston books through **MiConsulado only**: online at citas.sre.gob.mx or by phone on **1 424 309 0009**, and its Spanish page stresses the service is completely free. The rules on its English page are strict and worth reading before you book:

- One appointment per person, and every family member needs their own.
- No walk-ins and no emergency appointments.
- No third parties: applicants apply themselves, in person, which the page calls an absolute requirement.
- For tourist visas it advises starting a month ahead; for residency, book once your file is complete.

On the day the consulate reviews your documents, takes your photograph and fingerprints, and interviews you. Its Spanish page says visas are normally issued within hours but that a same-day visa is not guaranteed, and the English page asks people who travel to Houston only for the visa to plan **one to three working days** in the city. The legal limit is ten business days. Do not buy flights until the visa is in your passport; Houston states it takes no responsibility for tickets bought before approval.

No one can book this for you

Houston says in terms that it accepts no third parties. Anyone offering to secure a Houston slot for a fee is offering something the consulate does not allow. **We do not book, resell or secure appointments.**

## The fee: bring USD 56

Houston's fee table, updated on 2 January 2026, lists the ordinary visa at **USD 56**, the figure SRE publishes nationally. Its three 2025 residency sheets still say USD 54. The table is the newer document. Payment may be made **in cash, by debit card or by credit card**, and the fee is kept if the visa is refused, so Houston recommends checking the file is complete before the interview.

## Spouses, dependents and retirees

**Married to a Mexican.** Houston's family unity sheet asks for the marriage record, original and copy, and proof of the spouse's Mexican nationality: a current Mexican passport or a Mexican birth record. The Mexican spouse must attend the appointment with you, and the names on your identity documents must match the names on the marriage record. The visa is a temporary resident one; the [family unity guide](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-family-unity-visa) explains the two-year path to permanent residency from there.

**Dependents of an applicant.** The solvency sheet adds 220 days of UMA a month per dependent, which it defines as a spouse, parent or child, proved with a marriage or birth record, original and copy. Houston prints this as about USD 1,405.02; at today's value it is about USD 1,520.

**Retirees.** Houston's permanent resident sheet is headed "por jubilación (>64 años) o pensión", by retirement over 64 or a pension. The national text speaks of "jubilados o pensionados" without an age. Someone under 65 drawing a pension fits the second half of Houston's own heading; someone under 65 who has simply stopped working should expect the question. The [permanent residency guide](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-permanent-resident-visa) covers the route in full.

## What does not match, and what to prepare to

| What we found | What to prepare to |
| --- | --- |
| Every dollar figure uses the 2025 UMA, about 7.6 percent under the 2026 value at today's rate | The 2026 figure: USD 4,700 a month or USD 79,200 in savings |
| The savings line is written in words as eleven thousand four hundred days of UMA; the dollar figure next to it matches 11,460, the multiple in the Lineamientos | 11,460 UMA, which is what the dollar figure already reflects |
| The sheets say the fee is USD 54; the fee table updated in January 2026 says USD 56 | USD 56 |
| The Spanish visa page says solvency amounts vary with the minimum wage in the Distrito Federal and invites applicants to write for the exact amounts | The UMA multiples, which replaced the minimum wage in 2025; write to the visa department if you want the post's own confirmation |
| The district page says 37 counties and lists 36 | Irrelevant to a residency visa, which any post can take |

None of this makes the consulate wrong to apply its own sheet. It makes the case for a file that satisfies both the sheet and the law.

## Who Houston serves

Houston's district page lists these Texas counties: Angelina, Austin, Brazoria, Brazos, Burleson, Calhoun, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Hardin, Harris, Houston, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Lavaca, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Matagorda, Montgomery, Newton, Orange, Polk, Robertson, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Trinity, Tyler, Victoria, Walker, Waller, Washington and Wharton.

The district matters to Mexican nationals using the consulate for passports and civil records. For a residency visa it is a starting point, not a rule: the national Lineamientos let any consular office take the application. The [consulate tracker](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexican-consulate-requirements-by-city) compares Houston with the other posts we have read.

## Frequently asked questions

### What income does the Mexican consulate in Houston ask for a temporary resident visa?

Houston's current sheet, marked v.2025.10.27, asks for 680 days of UMA a month in tax-free employment or pension income for each of the last six months, and prints it as about USD 4,342.08. That dollar figure was calculated on the 2025 UMA. The same 680 UMA at the 2026 value is MXN 79,771, about USD 4,700 at the Banxico rate of 16.9722 on 10 September 2026, so prepare to USD 4,700.

### How do I book a visa appointment at the Houston Mexican consulate?

Through MiConsulado, online at citas.sre.gob.mx or by phone on 1 424 309 0009, and the service is free. Houston's English visa page says bookings are made solely through MiConsulado, one appointment per person, each family member with a separate appointment, no walk-ins or emergency appointments, and no third parties: applicants apply themselves.

### How much is the visa fee at the Houston consulate, and can I pay by card?

Houston's fee table, updated on 2 January 2026, lists the ordinary visa at USD 56, while its 2025 requirement sheets still print USD 54. Bring USD 56. Its visa page says payment may be in cash, debit or credit card, and the fee is not refunded if the visa is refused.

### Does the Houston consulate issue the visa on the same day?

Often within hours, according to its Spanish visa page, but it does not guarantee a same-day visa. Its English page tells applicants who travel to Houston only for the visa to plan a stay of one to three working days, and says processing can take from one to ten business days.

### Which counties does the Mexican consulate in Houston cover?

Its district page says 37 counties of Texas and lists 36 names, among them Harris, Fort Bend, Galveston, Montgomery, Brazoria, Jefferson, Brazos and Victoria. Living outside them does not stop you applying in Houston: the national rules let any consular office take a visa application.

### What bank documents does the Houston consulate accept?

For the savings route, either statements certified by your bank, with a signature or stamp, for each of the last twelve months, or a hand-signed letter from the bank giving your full name as it appears in your passport and the month-end balance for each of those twelve months, plus copies of the statements. For income, six months of certified statements showing the deposits, with a hand-signed employer letter or pension letter.

### Can my spouse apply at the Houston consulate?

Yes, on the family unity route. The spouse of a Mexican citizen applies with a marriage record and proof of the partner's Mexican nationality, and Houston's sheet says the Mexican spouse must attend the appointment. A dependent of a temporary resident applicant adds 220 days of UMA a month per person, which Houston prints as about USD 1,405.02 and which is about USD 1,520 at today's rate. Each family member books a separate appointment.
