# The canje stamp: the one word that saves your Mexican residency visa

You waited two months for the consulate appointment and paid the fee. The next thirty seconds at the Mexican border decide whether any of it counts.

Quick answer

A Mexican consular resident visa is valid for **one entry within 180 days**. At the border you must be admitted for the **canje**, the exchange of that visa for a resident card, not as a tourist. A tourist stamp spends the visa and the only remedy is a new application at a consulate abroad. The canje stamp starts a **30 calendar day** deadline to file with INM.

## What the canje actually is

The sticker a Mexican consulate puts in your passport is not residency. It is permission to travel to Mexico once, within 180 days, and to start an exchange there. The Spanish word for that exchange is **canje**, and the whole rest of the process hangs off it. It works the same way whether you hold a [temporary resident visa](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-temporary-resident-visa) or a permanent one.

Two different things have to happen. The officer at the port of entry has to record that you are entering to make the exchange, which is the stamp in your passport. Then you have to file the exchange itself with the Instituto Nacional de Migración, from inside Mexico, within 30 calendar days. The border officer cannot do the second part, and the INM cannot fix the first.

This is where a residency application most often dies for a reason that had nothing to do with the applicant's income, their documents, or the consulate's decision.

## What to say at the border

Hand the officer your passport open at the visa sticker, and say that you are entering to exchange your resident visa. Either language works at a Mexican airport, and the sticker does most of the talking.

The sentence

In Spanish: **Vengo a hacer el canje de mi visa de residente.**

In English: **I am entering to exchange my resident visa.**

Do not fill in a tourist card, and do not answer the purpose of travel question with tourism or holiday out of habit. That answer, on its own, is how most wrong stamps happen. You are not visiting. You are moving there, and the paperwork in your hand says so.

If you are arriving by land, the same applies at the immigration module, which at some crossings is a separate building from the vehicle lane. Stop at it. A crossing without an immigration stop leaves you in Mexico with no entry record at all, which is a worse position than a tourist stamp.

## Check the stamp before you leave the booth

Look at what has just been put in your passport while the officer is still in front of you. Two things matter. The number of days should be **30**, not 180. The stamp or the annotation next to it should refer to the canje or to your condition as a resident, not to a visitor.

If it is wrong, say so immediately and point at the visa sticker. A correction at the counter takes a minute. The same correction after you have left the airport is not a correction at all, it is a new consular application.

Photograph the stamp

Before you leave the airport, photograph the stamp and the sticker on the same page. You will need the entry date for the INM filing, the stamp is the proof that the clock started when you say it did, and Mexican entry stamps are not always easy to read a month later.

## If you get the wrong stamp anyway

Deal with it in the airport if you can. Immigration supervisors are on site at every international terminal, and a stamp issued minutes ago against a valid resident visa in the same passport is the easiest version of this problem to fix.

Once you have left, be honest with yourself about the position. The consular visa was good for one entry and that entry has been used. Filing a canje against a tourist admission does not work, and presenting yourself at an INM office as a resident when your entry record says visitor is not a strategy. The route back is a new consulate appointment, a new file and a new fee, from outside Mexico.

What you can still salvage is the file itself. Your bank statements, employment letter and the rest of the document set do not expire the moment the stamp goes wrong, and a second application built on the same evidence is faster than the first. What you lose is the appointment queue and the fee.

## The 30 day clock, and what it is for

From the date on that stamp you have **30 calendar days** to file the exchange with INM, under Article 59 of the Reglamento de la Ley de Migración. Calendar days, so weekends and Mexican public holidays are inside the count, and December is a genuinely bad month to cut it fine.

Filing means submitting the request through the INM portal, which is in Spanish, with a formal letter, your passport and sticker, the entry stamp and the fee. INM then gives you an appointment for fingerprints and a photograph, and the procedure's own published term is a maximum of **15 working days** to resolve, inside the 20 working day ceiling that Article 128 of the Ley de Migración sets for migration procedures generally. Since 2025 offices have been using more of that window than they used to.

Two practical points follow. Do not book the flight for day 25 of the 30, because the filing is the part that goes wrong and you want room to fix it. And do not plan to leave Mexico while the file is open unless INM has issued you a permiso de salida y regreso.
