Moving to Mexico legally means one of two residency visas: Residente Temporal for most people, Residente Permanente for a retiree whose pension clears the higher line. Mexico has no digital nomad visa. You apply at a Mexican consulate before you move, then exchange the visa for a resident card at INM within 30 days of arriving. We handle that process for USD 599, and every figure on this site cites the DOF, INEGI or SRE text it comes from.

## How moving to Mexico works, in five steps

Moving to Mexico legally is one process with five steps, and four of them happen before you arrive. Nothing here is a lottery or a quota: the residency you get is decided by the money you can evidence and the paperwork you bring, which is why almost everything that goes wrong goes wrong at the file stage rather than at the decision.

1. **Decide which residency you are applying for.** Residente Temporal or Residente Permanente. The decision is made by money rather than by how long you intend to stay: a retiree whose pension clears the higher line applies for permanent residency directly, and almost everyone else starts temporary.
2. **Assemble the financial evidence.** Six months of income statements or twelve months of account balances, issued and stamped by the bank rather than printed at home, in the applicant's own name as it appears in the passport.
3. **Apply at a Mexican consulate, before you move.** The application is made outside Mexico. Book through MiConsulado at citas.sre.gob.mx, through the WhatsApp booking SRE offers in the United States and Canada, or through a post's own channel. The interview takes about twenty minutes, the consular fee is USD 56, and the consulate has up to 10 working days to decide.
4. **Enter Mexico on the visa, not as a tourist.** The visa in your passport is valid for 180 days and one entry. Hand in the immigration form at the border and make sure the officer records the entry as a canje, because an entry stamped as a tourist spends the visa you waited for.
5. **Exchange the visa for your resident card at INM.** File the canje with INM within 30 calendar days of entering, give biometrics, and pay the card fee of MXN 11,140.74 for a one year temporary card or MXN 13,578.96 for a permanent one. INM has up to 15 working days on the canje, and the card is collected in person.

The two steps people underestimate are the last two. The entry stamp has to say canje, and the 30 day clock on the resident card starts the moment you land. Both are covered in detail on [the canje stamp](https://getmexicovisa.com/canje-stamp-mexico) and [the INM appointment](https://getmexicovisa.com/inm-appointment-resident-card).

## Which residency you are applying for

Mexico issues two residencies to people moving there on their own money. Which one you apply for is not a preference; it follows from what you can prove.

| | Residente Temporal | Residente Permanente |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who it fits | Remote workers, pre-retirees and anyone moving on income or savings | Retirees and pensioners above the higher line, and family of Mexican citizens |
| What you show | Income above MXN 79,771 a month, or savings averaging MXN 1,344,373 | Pension above MXN 133,733 a month, or savings averaging MXN 5,378,664 |
| First card | One year | Indefinite for an adult |
| After that | Renewed inside Mexico for one to three more years, four in total, then permanent | No renewals |
| Working in Mexico | A separate work permission, applied for by the resident | Permission to work is included |

The detail sits on [the temporary residency guide](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-temporary-resident-visa) and [the permanent residency guide](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-permanent-resident-visa). Retirees have their own page, [retire in Mexico](https://getmexicovisa.com/retire-in-mexico-visa), because the mistake that costs them most is starting temporary when they qualify for permanent outright. If a Mexican spouse, parent or child is involved, the test is different again: see [the spouse and family route](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-family-unity-visa).

## How much money you have to show

The financial test is national, the same at every consulate, and written in multiples of the UMA, an inflation indexed unit INEGI republishes each January. It is **MXN 117.31 a day in 2026**. The peso figure is the requirement; the dollar figure is an approximation at the Banxico rate of 16.9722 on 10 September 2026.

| Route | UMA | Pesos | About | Look-back |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Temporary, income | 680 a month | MXN 79,771 | USD 4,700 | last 6 months |
| Temporary, savings | 11,460 average | MXN 1,344,373 | USD 79,200 | last 12 months |
| Permanent, pension | 1,140 a month | MXN 133,733 | USD 7,900 | last 6 months |
| Permanent, savings | 45,850 average | MXN 5,378,664 | USD 316,900 | last 12 months |
| Each dependent | 220 a month | MXN 25,808 | USD 1,520 | with the principal |

Check your own numbers first

[The residency calculator](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-residency-income-calculator) puts your income or balance against these lines in pesos and dollars. It is free, takes no email address and stores nothing.

A consulate's published figure may differ from the table above, usually because its sheet was written against an older UMA or converted into local currency on a different date. [The consulate tracker](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexican-consulate-requirements-by-city) records what each post publishes and when it was read.

## What it costs

Two sets of numbers: what the Mexican government charges, and what we charge. Government fees are paid directly to the consulate and to INM.

| | Temporary residency | Permanent residency |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Consular visa fee | USD 56 | USD 56 |
| INM resident card | MXN 11,140.74 (one year) | MXN 13,578.96 |
| Government total | about MXN 12,054, roughly USD 712 | about MXN 14,492, roughly USD 856 |
| Our fee | USD 599, one payment | USD 599, one payment |

Card fees **doubled on 1 January 2026**, which is why a budget built from a guide written last year is roughly half of what it should be. Apostilles and certified translations, where a post asks for them, are paid separately. Everything is itemised on [what Mexican residency costs](https://getmexicovisa.com/mexico-residency-cost).

## How long it takes

After the interview the consulate has **up to 10 working days** to decide, and the visa it issues is valid for **180 days and one entry**. Once you land, the canje has to be filed within **30 calendar days**, and INM has up to 15 working days on it before the card is issued.

The step nobody can put a date on is the appointment. Waiting times differ from post to post and move with demand, and they are the reason most moving timelines slip. Book the appointment first and assemble the file while you wait, rather than the other way around.

## What we do for USD 599

One price for the whole process, paid once when you sign: choosing the route, reviewing your financial evidence before it goes anywhere, preparing the consulate application and the interview, guidance through the entry and the canje, and the INM appointment and fees, through to the resident card in your hand. The same price whether the answer is temporary or permanent residency.

What it does not include: the government fees above, apostilles, and certified translations where a post requires them. The decision is always the consulate's and INM's, and no service can promise otherwise.

We never book or resell consulate appointments

Appointments are issued free through SRE's own channels and nobody can legitimately sell you one. A United States consulate has publicly warned about people who claim they can. We prepare your file and your interview; the slot comes from MiConsulado.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I move to Mexico legally?

You apply for a residency visa at a Mexican consulate before you move, enter Mexico on that visa, and exchange it for a resident card at INM within 30 calendar days of arriving. There are two statuses, Residente Temporal and Residente Permanente, and which one you apply for is decided by the income, pension or savings you can prove. Living in Mexico on repeated tourist entries is not a residency route and has become the least reliable way to be there.

### Does Mexico have a digital nomad visa?

No. There is no Mexican visa category named for digital nomads or remote workers. A remote worker qualifies through the same economic solvency test everyone else uses, almost always as a Residente Temporal, on income paid from outside Mexico.

### How much money do you need to move to Mexico?

For temporary residency, net income above MXN 79,771 a month, about USD 4,700, over the last six months, or an average balance above MXN 1,344,373, about USD 79,200, over the last twelve. For permanent residency as a retiree, pension income above MXN 133,733 a month, about USD 7,900, or savings averaging above MXN 5,378,664. Each dependent adds MXN 25,808 a month. The figures are multiples of the UMA, MXN 117.31 a day in 2026, so the peso amount is the requirement and the dollar figure is an approximation.

### Can I apply for Mexican residency while I am in Mexico?

Not on the solvency routes. The visa is applied for at a consular office outside Mexico, and a tourist permit cannot be converted into one. The exceptions are family cases: a foreigner with a Mexican spouse, parent or child, or the family of a resident, can be authorised by INM inside Mexico, and family cases are only taken at a consulate when the Mexican or resident relative is abroad and attends.

### Which Mexican consulate do I have to use?

Any consular office can take a residency visa application. The Lineamientos say the application is made at a consular office, and SRE's own visa FAQ tells applicants they may book a post that suits them, so a shorter queue somewhere else is a legitimate option. Some posts ask for proof that you live in their district, which is post practice rather than national rule, so read the requirements of the post you book.

### How long does the whole process take?

The consulate has up to 10 working days to decide after the interview, and the visa it issues is valid for 180 days. Once you enter, the canje has to be filed within 30 calendar days and INM has up to 15 working days on it. The part nobody can promise is the appointment: waiting times differ from post to post and are the reason most timelines slip.

### What does Mexican residency cost in total?

In government fees, the consular visa fee of USD 56 plus the INM card fee: about MXN 12,054, roughly USD 712, for a one year temporary card, or about MXN 14,492, roughly USD 856, for permanent residency. Card fees doubled on 1 January 2026, so a budget built from a 2025 guide is half of what it should be. Apostilles and certified translations, where a post asks for them, are paid separately.

### Do I have to give up my American or Canadian citizenship?

Not to be a resident. Residency changes nothing about the nationality you hold. Naturalising as a Mexican later is a different question: the Ley de Nacionalidad requires a naturalising foreigner to renounce the other nationality, and Mexico's 1998 dual nationality rule protects Mexicans by birth rather than naturalised citizens.

### Does moving to Mexico make me a Mexican taxpayer?

Your visa does not decide it. Mexico sets tax residency by where your home is, and reaches for a day count only when two countries both claim you. Americans also keep filing in the United States wherever they live. Tax is the one part of this we do not advise on, and it is worth an accountant who works across both countries.

### What does the USD 599 cover?

Choosing the route, reviewing the financial evidence before it is submitted, preparing the consulate application and the interview, guidance on the entry and the canje, and the INM appointment and fees, through to the resident card being issued. Government fees, apostilles and certified translations are paid directly and are not included. We do not book or resell consulate appointments: nobody can legitimately sell you a slot, and a United States consulate has publicly warned about people who claim to.
